Can you just switch the SIM card in your cell phone when you travel overseas? - can i just switch the sim card overseas

Can I use my normal phone, and switch between SIM cards? What people would normally not, or If I need a new phone in the country you travel?

This is what is usually, but some are against having different bandwidths for GSM networks, in this case, if the phone is not in the correct range, so that then to be working with a local SIM card and you would have used a telephone to buy.
